Is it time for a Board Retreat and you don’t have the capacity to plan and organize the entire meeting?
Do you want strategic input from the entire board?
Do you want to create alignment among the board members?
Are there sensitive topics you would like to engage the board in discussing?
Board Retreats may be the most important meetings for nonprofit organizations. If not the most important, then certainly they are the most expensive in terms of peoples’ time.
Properly planned and facilitated, Board Retreats reengage board members, create excitement about the organization, and include discussions which lead to decisions being made.
I have always enjoyed leading meetings, especially board retreats. I welcome the opportunity to work with the CEO and Board Chair to clarify a retreat’s objectives, create an agenda designed to accomplish those objectives, and then facilitate the activities and discussions which lead to action. The most enjoyable may be facilitating sensitive topics which the CEO needs the board to discuss, but in which he/she needs to participate and not facilitate.
My approach to facilitating Board Retreats is:
- Ensure an unbiased perspective frames and directs the discussion (better outcomes)
- Engage participants so there is 100% contribution to the discussion (buy-in)
- Create a sense of ownership and camaraderie among the participants (teamwork)
- Harness the collective wisdom of the group to produce a better outcome than otherwise would have been produced (better outcomes)
